Shaft Log Bearing

I bought a 1978 Stamas 32 Sedan in the process of removing the shaft to replace the cutlass bearing on the shaft support, I pulled the packing box off the shaft log and there was no bearing in the log? should there be? when the shaft coupling was disconnected the shaft dropped a 1/2 inch leading me to believe there should be...

Typically there is a rubber hose to the shaft log/ stern tube that the packing box connects to.  There should be a cutless bearing/sleeve bearing that is in the stern tube from the outside into the stern tube that the shaft rides in.  This will provide support for the shaft to keep it straight and vibration free.
