Advice for unusual application

2 posts in this topic

I carve large scale carousel animals and would like to finish my next two projects clear coat to emphasize the wood.  The issues being similar with those of boats, I thought I could get some good advice on what to use as the options at Jamestown Distributors are more that extensive.    These pieces will be carved of basswood (very fine grain) and I likely will want to deepen the wood with a transparent stain.  Destiny is likely indoors, but very long lasting clear finish that stands up to some abuse would be desireable.  Ease of application will be a factor, I will not lie.  Advice and suggestions appreciated.

I would suggest 6 to 8 coats of spar varnish like Totalboat Gleam.  It is easy to brush or spray.  It is an amber color traditional spar varnish and should last a long time indoors.
