aluminum boat -painting over existing interior paint

2 posts in this topic

Hello,

I have a 16.5 foot aluminum boat and wish to re-paint the interior aluminum.  Do I need to completely remove the paint and then etch the aluminum or will the total boat aluminum paint work directly over the existing paint?  Thanks.

You will need to remove any loose clean thoroughly to remove any dirt, oil, grease or contaminants, then dry completely. If the bare aluminum has a dull, oxidized look, use 220-grit to sand until shiny, remove sanding residue, wipe with denatured alcohol or use TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Etch Wash as directed, and allow to dry completely before immediately applying TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Paint.  If the paint is adhered well, you don't need to remove it all.
